General-purpose Oceaneering Latching Device
Facility Description
The GOLD-2 performs mechanical, electrical and data connectivity for International Space Station (ISSInternational Space Station) external payloads, and is the primary external payload interface for the NanoRacks airlock and the Bartolomeo platform. GOLD-2 is designed to attach payloads to external ISS platforms via the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) and Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM). The GOLD-2 consists of two distinct components, the Passive and Active Assemblies. The Passive Assembly is integrated with an External Platform, and is launched in place and is outfitted with electrical socket connectors, incorporating spring-loaded doors to keep debris out. The GOLD-2 Active side is integrated with a Payload prior to launch and incorporates a micro-square fixture for in-orbit SPDM (gripper) attachment. The GOLD-2 accommodates payloads up to 454 kg (1000lbs) that are sized up to 1 cubic meter, and can withstand 125 lbf kick loads from astronauts performing spacewalks. The baseline configuration electrical interface uses Smiths Interconnect’s L-Series connectors, featuring a ruggedized, high density connector module/pin configuration and contain guided hardware for blind mating. The L-Series connectors provide mixed signal, power, and coaxial modules, offering high mating cycles, low insertion and extraction mating forces, and immunity to shock and vibration.
