Scientific Advancements & Results
Space-based research is essential for advancing scientific knowledge and achieving groundbreaking R&D outcomes that are unattainable on Earth. Sharing these results fosters the growth of the space community and encourages more researchers to consider space as a viable option for addressing their most significant challenges.
Upward
Upward serves as the premier platform for disseminating results from ISSInternational Space Station National Lab-sponsored research and technology development (R&D) to the global scientific community, including both current and prospective space station investigators. Our mission for Upward is to highlight the value of space-based R&D and showcase the tangible successes of ISS National Lab-sponsored projects. By taking R&D upward to the space station and beyond, Upward advances scientific knowledge, fosters a sustainable economy in low Earth orbit(Abbreviation: LEO) The orbit around the Earth that extends up to an altitude of 2,000 km (1,200 miles) from Earth’s surface. The International Space Station’s orbit is in LEO, at an altitude of approximately 250 miles. and contributes to the betterment of humanity. Launched in February 2016, Upward is available online and as a printable PDF.
Case studies
ISS National Lab case studies examine unique research projects that have demonstrated the benefits of conducting space-based research. Each case study offers a comprehensive overview of complex issues by presenting goals, outcomes, insights, and additional resources. Case studies are intended to enhance a reader’s understanding of the kinds of research done in microgravityThe condition of perceived weightlessness created when an object is in free fall, for example when an object is in orbital motion. Microgravity alters many observable phenomena within the physical and life sciences, allowing scientists to study things in ways not possible on Earth. The International Space Station provides access to a persistent microgravity environment. and provide critical information for future researchers looking for practical examples of how to execute a project successfully.
