We are excited to share the newest episode of Between a Rocket & a Hard Space, the official podcast of the ISS National Lab. In this episode, we sit down with one of the most influential figures in space-based protein crystal growth (PCG) research: Paul Reichert of Merck Research Labs.
Reichert has played a pivotal role in advancing biomedical investigations onboard the space station (and even the space shuttle). Over the years, he has led multiple PCG experiments in microgravity, helping researchers better understand how protein crystallization in space could support the development of new and improved drugs back on Earth.
In this insightful conversation, Reichert reflects on his early spaceflight research projects (including the memorable challenge of planning his wedding around a mission launch). He underscores the importance of open scientific collaboration and how sharing techniques and results has helped build a stronger foundation for PCG research across the scientific community. The episode also discusses the evolution of the ISS as a research platform and how decades of work have shaped today’s biomedical capabilities in low Earth orbit.
Reichert has a passion for advancing science and fostering a community that learns and grows together and shares his excitement about what the future holds for space-enabled drug discovery.
