Expedition Space Lab Mission:
Sound in Space

1 Activity
ACTIVITY 1
SPACE STATION EXPLORERS PARTNER PROGRAM:
ARISS
- Talk to an astronaut onboard the ISSInternational Space Station using ham radio.
- This once-in-a-lifetime experience teaches students the fundamentals of radio communication and 21st century skills.

LESSON
Seeing Sound from NASA
In space, radio waves carrying sound travel to the ISS so that we can communicate with the astronauts onboard. We can hear sound, but is it possible to see sound? In this activity from NASANational Aeronautics and Space Administration, students will build a waveform monitor to see sound and examine how it moves.

Students use simple radio communications equipment to send messages to and from the ISS. For the radio, they use software running on a computer in a system called software-defined radio (SDR). They also use a small hand-held antenna that they point at the ISS when it flies over.
Expedition Space Lab is an online tool from the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory that provides educators with easy access to ISS-related lessons, activities, and other resources to integrate into their curriculum.
