Life Sciences Glovebox

Short Name: LSG

Current Status: Onboard

The Life Sciences Glovebox (LSG) is an enclosed work area that accommodates research in a “workbench”-type environment. Two crew members can work in the LSG at the same time. The enclosed working volume is held at negative pressure relative to the crew living area. The LSG is a level of containment, and experiments are designed to attach such that there is no exchange of biological matter between the cabin and the LSG. Air is continually circulated in the LSG, and activated carbon filters are used to absorb any chemicals that may be present. Additionally, high-efficiency air filters remove any particles or aerosols, which allows the LSG to provide two levels of containment for handling Biohazard Level II and lower biological materials. Investigations in the LSG have access to a workspace of 15 cubic feet, air filtration, adjustable fans, a combined 350 W of 28V DC and 110V AC power, video, data, real-time downlink, adjustable illumination, temperature regulation from 18 ˚C to 27 ˚C, and surfaces for magnetic attachment.
