Rhodium Variable Gravity Simulator
Facility Description
The Rhodium Variable Gravity Simulator™ (RhVGS-01) is the only high throughput, low speed centrifuge on the ISSInternational Space Station capable of producing forces equal to Lunar, Martian and Earth gravity. Unique to the RhVGS-01 is the ability to unload and load new samples while on the ISS (up to 36 samples per operational period). This provides researchers the ability to test multiple sample types, gravity forces, and incubation time points like never before possible on the ISS. In addition, Rhodium can provide access to the proprietary Rhodium Quality, Industry Compatible (QuIC) Space Process™ for industry-recognized quality assurances that help de-risk the overall mission.
The only way to accurately simulate a partial gravity environment is to add force. All terrestrial microgravityThe condition of perceived weightlessness created when an object is in free fall, for example when an object is in orbital motion. Microgravity alters many observable phenomena within the physical and life sciences, allowing scientists to study things in ways not possible on Earth. The International Space Station provides access to a persistent microgravity environment. analogs produced mixed force environments that induce fluid mixing, thus an inherently inaccurate gravity environment. By starting on the ISS in a near zero G environment, the single direction centrifugal force of the centrifuge imparts an accurate partial gravity environment necessary to test biological systems. As of Summer of 2024, The RhVGS-01 facility had supported a DARPA Biomanufacturing mission with another two missions manifested for launch and operation in 2024.
The Rhodium Variable Gravity Simulator™ (RhVGS-01) is available for immediate use and can support launches within 6-9 months of mission kickoff. The Rhodium Science and Mission Operations Teams will work to develop the best mission plan to optimize results and maximize success potentials for each science experiment.
