Wet Lab RNA SmartCycler

Short Name: Wet Lab RNA SmartCycler

Current Status: Onboard

The Wet Lab RNA SmartCycler is a tool used to conduct real-time quantitative gene expression analysis on the ISS for applications that range from fundamental biology to commercial drug discovery. It enables spaceflight genomic studies involving a wide variety of biospecimen and can measure gene transcription or rapidly detect gene targets that indicate infectious disease; cell stress; changes in cell cycle, growth, and development; and genetic abnormality. Gene expression data elucidates the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in space-induced conditions such as bone and muscle loss, impaired immunity, and increased microbial virulence. Wet Lab RNA SmartCycler can also be used to monitor environmental conditions and crew health through real-time analysis of air, surface, water, or clinical samples.
