Axiom Space’s fourth private astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISSInternational Space Station) is currently scheduled to launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center no earlier than June 25. The international crew of four—Axiom Space Director of Human Spaceflight and former NASANational Aeronautics and Space Administration astronaut Peggy Whitson (commander), Shubhanshu Shukla of India (pilot), Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski of Poland (mission specialist), and Tibor Kapu of Hungary (mission specialist)—will deliver more than 60 research projects to the orbiting laboratory.
Several ISS National Lab-sponsored investigations are flying on this mission. One study aims to advance diabetes management in space and open access to spaceflight for more people. A technology demonstration will test a wearable biometrics device for astronauts that tracks metrics like heart rate and sleep quality. Researchers will build on a previous investigation from Axiom Mission 2 studying cancer growth in space to identify early cancer warning signs and find new targets for drug development. Also on this mission are investigations to study the impact of spaceflight on psychological well-being and mental health as well as plant research that could improve agricultural practices here on Earth.
