Student Mission Control
This EAGER (EArly-Concept Grants for Exploratory Research) project, funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, tested a bold concept to engage high school students with direct access to data from the International Space Station (ISS) to use assets in computer science and data science courses to help students develop data inquiry, analysis, and exploration skills. This pilot project will lead to subsequent work to develop and integrate these resources and activities for middle and high school computer science courses.
This project addresses a real problem in computing education: how to make the data analysis components of computer and data science courses have richness, depth, and engagement. Taking advantage of the educational power and appeal of space exploration and the many connections to key domains of computer science, a Student Mission Control website, serves as the framework for materials.
