5 Things to Do at the 2017 ISSR&D Conference
This July, the space research community will gather in Washington, D.C., at the 2017 International Space Station Research and Development Conference to discuss the latest results in space science, new hardware and capabilities available on the International Space Station (ISSInternational Space Station), and exciting developments that could significantly affect the industry’s future. As the summer’s premier space event, the ISSR&D Conference provides a wealth of information for new users, veteran researchers, industry insiders, space enthusiasts, and the public. With a host of engaging keynote presentations, in-depth technical sessions, and an interactive Marketplace Expo featuring a variety of innovative companies, there is so much to experience at this conference. As you make your plans to attend the conference, preview the highlighted event features below to ensure you maximize your conference experience.
- 1
Attend the New User Workshop
Whether you’re a prospective space researcher or a veteran in the field, the New & Future Users Workshop is an ideal orientation class for the conference experience. Experts from NASANational Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (the ISS National Lab) will highlight how the U.S. National Laboratory on the ISS functions as a modern research platform that can advance scientific discovery and provide solutions for real-world problems. The workshop will provide an overview of how the ISS National Lab and NASA work together to facilitate new research from a variety of new users, such as commercial entities, academic institutions, entrepreneurs, and students.

Visit the “Ask an ISS Expert” Exhibit
ISSR&D Conference is a catalyst for innovation. Many attendees are interested in conducting research in microgravityThe condition of perceived weightlessness created when an object is in free fall, for example when an object is in orbital motion. Microgravity alters many observable phenomena within the physical and life sciences, allowing scientists to study things in ways not possible on Earth. The International Space Station provides access to a persistent microgravity environment. but aren’t familiar with the process or how to connect with key decision makers. During the conference, a special helpdesk will be available to answer a wide range of attendee questions about conducting research in space or even what’s possible to study in microgravity. The “Ask an ISS Expert” exhibit will be supported by a variety of NASA and the ISS National Lab personnel who work every day to support ISS research operations and logistics. This one-of-a-kind exhibit will avail the expertise and experience of many ISS research experts to all ISSR&D Conference attendees.

Check out the Marketplace Expo
If you’re looking to connect with industry and subject matter experts supporting a wide-range of space research then the Marketplace Expo is the place to be. Representatives from more than 20 companies like Boeing, Bigelow Aerospace, Orbital ATK, and more will be on hand to talk about services, capabilities, and research opportunities available in low Earth orbit(Abbreviation: LEO) The orbit around the Earth that extends up to an altitude of 2,000 km (1,200 miles) from Earth’s surface. The International Space Station’s orbit is in LEO, at an altitude of approximately 250 miles..
