Ringing in the New Year on Earth and in Space

Astronauts Anne McClain of NASA, David Saint-Jacques of the Canadian Space Agency, and Oleg Konenenko of Roscosmos welcomed the New Year in a unique way—from onboard the International Space Station (ISS). The three Expedition 58 crew members launched to the ISS in early December and will spend more than six months conducting hundreds of science experiments onboard the orbiting laboratory.

Meanwhile, Expedition 57 crew members Serena Auñón-Chancellor of NASA, Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency, and Sergey Prokopyev of Roscosmos celebrated the start of 2019 from back on the ground. After a 197-day mission onboard the ISS, the crew returned to Earth just before the holidays, safely landing in Kazakhstan on December 20.
