Sally Ride – First American Woman in Space

On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride became the first American woman to fly in space when the space shuttle Challenger launched on mission STS 7. As one of the three mission specialists on the STS 7 mission, she played a vital role in helping the crew deploy communications satellites, conduct experiments and make use of the first Shuttle Pallet Satellite. Today marks the 35th anniversary of America’s first woman in space. On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride launched into space aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on what NASA considered to be their most complex shuttle mission to date. Ride leaves a lasting legacy with the Sally Ride EarthKam program that allows everyone the opportunity to see Earth as only astronauts can.
