NIST’s Christie Canaria to Deliver Keynote Address at ISSRDC Focused on Space and Semiconductor Development

SEATTLE (WA), July 7, 2023 – The 12th annual International Space Station Research and Development Conference (ISSRDC) today announced Christie Canaria, senior advisor to the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors for America (CHIPS) Act for research and development at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), as a keynote speaker. ISSRDC will take place from July 31 to August 3, 2023, at the Hyatt Regency in Seattle.

Canaria oversees various projects and workstreams as program manager for NIST’s research and development initiative under the CHIPS Act. She also supports the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC), its committees, and its working groups. In addition, Canaria serves the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy National Science and Technology Council’s Lab to Market Subcommittee, its working groups, and its strategy team.

Last year, the Biden and Harris administration brought forth the CHIPS Act in an effort to make large-scale investments into strengthening our nation’s manufacturing and industrial base, which is also of strategic importance to NASA and the International Space Station (ISS) National Laboratory. Over the years, NASA and the ISS National Lab have put forth a variety of research announcements to utilize the orbiting laboratory for manufacturing advancements in the areas of technology development, materials science, life and physical sciences, and industry-related workforce development.

During her remarks at ISSRDC, Canaria will highlight the importance of leveraging the unique space environment to advance translational concepts in the development of future semiconductors or other technologies that bring value to humanity.

“We are excited that Dr. Canaria will join us at ISSRDC to discuss the CHIPS Act, its efforts to modernize the development of semiconductors, and pathways by which the space station can help push the limits of technology development and innovation,” said Ray Lugo, chief executive officer of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space, Inc. (CASIS), manager of the ISS National Lab.

ISSRDC brings together leaders from the commercial sector, U.S. government agencies, and academic communities to foster innovation and discovery onboard the International Space Station. ISSRDC 2023 will showcase how the space station continues to provide a valuable platform for research and technology development that benefits humanity and enables a robust and sustainable market in low Earth orbit.
